LEGO Mario Kart Sets: A New Era for Adult Collectors

In recent years, LEGO has been expanding its collaboration with Nintendo, bringing beloved franchises like Super Mario and Animal Crossing to life in brick form. The latest addition to this lineup is the LEGO Mario Kart series, which includes both sets aimed at younger collectors and a new, more complex set designed specifically for adults.

LEGO Mario Kart Sets for Younger Collectors

LEGO has announced six new Mario Kart sets, set to release on January 1, 2025. These sets range in price from $14.99 to $79.99 and feature iconic characters and vehicles from the Mario Kart universe. The sets include:

  • Yoshi Bike: Priced at $14.99 with 133 pieces, this set features a blue Yoshi riding a green Yoshi Bike.
  • Standard Kart: Available for $19.99 with 174 pieces, it includes a Toad mechanic but no driver, allowing users to place a figure from the mainline Super Mario LEGO sets.
  • Donkey Kong and DK Jumbo: This set costs $34.99 and includes 387 pieces.
  • Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi: Priced at $29.99 with 390 pieces, it features the infant siblings and their mini-karts.
  • Toad’s Garage: Available for $39.99 with 390 pieces, it includes a Toad-themed kart.
  • Baby Peach & Grand Prix: The largest set in the series, priced at $79.99 with 823 pieces, featuring a starting gate, several characters, and power-ups.

These sets are designed to be compatible with the mainline Super Mario LEGO figures, allowing for interactive play with sound and visual effects when used with figures like Mario, Luigi, or Peach.

New Adult-Oriented LEGO Mario Kart Set

A new LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set has been spotted online, aimed at adult collectors. This set consists of 1,972 pieces and is priced at approximately $158 USD or £122 GBP. It features a buildable Mario figure with a posable head and arms, sitting behind the wheel of the iconic Mario Kart vehicle. The set also includes a stand to display the kart at dynamic angles, creating the illusion of it turning a corner.

This set is rated 18+ due to its complexity and is expected to be officially announced on Mario Day (March 10), a day when LEGO typically reveals new Super Mario-themed sets.

Trend of Video Game-Themed LEGO Sets for Adults

LEGO has been increasingly catering to adult collectors with video game-themed sets. Previous releases include a LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System, a 2,807-piece Bowser, a Piranha Plant, a Mario 64 Question Block, and The Great Deku Tree from The Legend of Zelda. Other notable sets include an Atari 2600, a Tallneck from Horizon Forbidden West, a Minecraft Crafting Table, and the Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog.

In addition, LEGO and Nintendo are collaborating on a LEGO Nintendo Game Boy, scheduled for release in October 2025. This set will consist of 421 pieces and is expected to be priced at $59.99.

These sets not only appeal to nostalgia but also offer complex builds that challenge and engage adult fans, making them perfect for display or as a creative outlet.
